Tell me a story 2.0

On the very first page of our book of projects, there is NEMOo•. Two syllables as a prologue to a whole story.

Just imagine … A restaurant! Take a seat at the table of your choice and Grab themenu. In this spiral notebook, you find the first tab: dishes. Until then everything is fine: this is a restaurant, you have come to taste.

The second tab is labelled “it’s up to you“ and is followed by only blank pages.

“Waiter, please. I’m not certain to understand this part of the menu…

_ Can I suggest you to follow me in the kitchen? ”

You go there, of course, and you find out a room full of busy people mixing, shaking, cutting, dosing, pouring, warming… The mysterious spiral notebook is next to each one of them, opened on the second tab. And everyone has a cap of those worn by master chefs. You too by the way, after the waiter has you covered with it while gently saying ”it’s up to you.”

That is NEMOo•’s workshop. The dishes are stories, the ingredients are words and spices become illustrations of all kinds….

NEMOo• is a great tool (i can tell).

This tool promises to become the starting point of great stories and a crossroads for junior authors, storytellers, but also informed writers. All these stories and creative people lie at the heart of the project. But the fact … What is exactly the project NEMOo•?

Those who have visited our pages have probably realized that there is an iPad application (to get started) getting ready, that this is both a library and a digital creative workshop, and that it’s hiding some mysteries, voluntarily maintained for obvious reasons.

However, there are some things we do not make secret, one in particular keeps surprising us: the wretch space of the texts into digital media such as ebooks, game-books and applications abounding these days (and which we will join soon … So be it.).

Let us be clear, it is not a matter of purism or a discussion about “the illustrations as distractions or disturbances”, and even less about getting lost in the field of criticism.

This is all about choices, specifically our choices about the organization and the overlapping elements in NEMOo •.

To make it short, since we will return to it frequently, we’ve decided to distinguish the text space out of the enrichments space. But not to separate them! Let’s rather say to redistribute them. There is nothing revolutionary in there: within NEMOo•’s pages, you will see texts.

Nevertheless, our main concern when we started this development, was to reconcile the importance we give to the text with the gain procured by the numerous digital enrichments. We wanted to develop a tool capable of taking advantage of both, whether you are a reader or a writer.

But then a third class of users has imposed on us, or rather a tandem: the storytellers and their audience. These have gradually invaded our workplan, increasing our thinking with the concepts of sharing, collaboration and narration skills. The tone was set!

The instructions were therefore as follows:

- Intuitive, engaging and open in design mode,

- Pleasant and consistent for readers,

- Immersive and spectacular, designed to tell,

- The text in the foreground

- Enrichments at the right time.

That’s the project NEMOo•!

And concerning ”Oo•”?

Well, this is for a future article.

After our french time along with Cecil McKinley (you can find that here : http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=426022394079515 ), this week NEMOo• brings you in Athens (Greece). We’re gonna have a lot of things to say about this city and its creative people. Let’s discover the first of them…

Jan Van de Engel is pseudonym for Greek drummerGiannis Angelopoulos, the name (Jan Van…) is a playful translation from Greek to Dutch of his name, “Misspent” is his solo CD project

He graduated from Rotterdam’s Conservatorium “Jazz & World” music department in 2002. He lives in Athens, working as a session drummer and participating in all kinds of projects.

The project blends elements of Nu-jazz, electro, pop, cinematic, Big Beat. It is a unique combination of analogue and digital. Live drums, double bass, voice, in parallel with a DJ like set-up.

Funky, dance grooves, propelling bass lines with sophisticated and atmospheric vocals.

Sense the music and dance.

UpperReading already working with several artists. This article is the first of its kind, a mini-bio about one of them. Many others will follow regularly to help you discover the work of our talents, and give you a taste of what awaits you in NEMOo •.

Born in 1971, Cecil McKinley took an early interest in art, trying writing, photography,music, painting, modeling, theater, and of course comics which will remain for him his art first. Having studied Applied Arts in Paris, he produced under various names ofillustrations and cartoons for newspapers, book covers, but also designs for children’s publishing. At the same time, he regularly exhibited his paintings or photos in various places. Several themes through its various creations: strangeness, eroticism, absurd,talking animals …

The 2000s constituted a turning point for him: without abandoning the establishment(he designed for theater, photography, and multiplies the musical experiments), he crossed the mirror and begins to write cultural articles for the web, mainly on thecomics (http://bdzoom.com/author/cecilm). Become biographer Claude Moliterni (co-creator of the festival of Angoulême) and BD specialist, he also organizes exhibitions,participates in festivals, lectured and taught this art medium he loves so much.
He is now working on various projects, including writing a script for an Italian designer and production of visual theater.
